LiftMaster models we work on
LiftMaster is the brand we see on more Bay Area garage ceilings than any other. They're made by Chamberlain Group and sold through professional dealers, so they tend to be well-built — but parts don't last forever, and the electronics on older units have known failure points. We service the full LiftMaster lineup:
- Chain-drive openers (1/2 HP and 3/4 HP) – the workhorse units from the 2000s and 2010s. Loud but reliable; when they fail it's usually the gear-and-sprocket assembly or the logic board.
- Belt-drive openers (84501, 8550W, 87504) – quieter residential units. The belt itself rarely fails; the circuit board and the motor capacitor are the typical weak points after 8–12 years.
- Wall-mount (8500W, 8500) – jackshaft openers that mount beside the door instead of on the ceiling. Great for low-headroom or tuck-under garages common in SF.

Why LiftMaster boards fail in coastal garages
Salt-laden fog doesn't just rust springs and hardware — it corrodes circuit board traces and relay contacts inside the opener housing. My LiftMaster opener hums but the door won't move. What's wrong?
Almost always the gear-and-sprocket assembly — a plastic gear inside the motor head that strips after years of use. The motor runs (hums), but the drive can't engage. Replacing the gear kit is routine and costs a fraction of a new opener. If the motor itself is burned out (you'll smell it), that changes the math toward replacement.
Is it worth repairing a 15-year-old LiftMaster?
Depends on the failure. A gear kit on a solid chain-drive? Absolutely — the motor and rail have years left. A fried logic board on a unit where the board costs $180 and a new opener costs $350 installed? Probably not. We price both options so you can decide with real numbers.
What does myQ do and do I need it?
myQ lets you open, close and monitor your garage door from a phone app, get alerts when it opens, and set schedules. It's built into newer LiftMaster units and can be added to some older ones. Can you install a wall-mount LiftMaster in my low-ceiling garage?
Yes — the 8500W jackshaft mounts on the wall beside the door, freeing up ceiling space. It's ideal for tuck-under garages and converted spaces common in San Francisco. We measure headroom and side-room before recommending it, because it needs specific clearances that not every opening has.
Why did my opener die after a power surge?
LiftMaster's logic boards are sensitive to voltage spikes, especially in older units without surge protection. The board fries and the unit goes completely dead. If the board is still available, we replace it; if not, it's time for a new opener. A surge protector on the outlet is cheap insurance going forward.
