Can I just spray WD-40 on it?
Please don't — WD-40 is a solvent and water displacer, not a lubricant, and it strips the grease your door needs. Use a silicone or white-lithium garage door lube on rollers, hinges and springs. If a proper lube doesn't quiet it within a day, the noisy part is worn, not dry.
How often should a Bay Area garage door be lubricated?
Every 6 months on the coast side (Sunset, Richmond, Pacifica, Half Moon Bay, Alameda shoreline) because fog and salt air wash lubricant off and feed corrosion — and roughly every 12 months inland. A door used more than 4–5 cycles a day should be on the shorter schedule wherever it lives.
Are nylon rollers really quieter than steel?
Dramatically. Steel rollers on steel track are the single loudest standard component — sealed-bearing nylon rollers cut that metal-on-metal grind to a hum, never need the same lubrication schedule, and don't rust in coastal air. It's the best value upgrade for a bedroom-over-garage home.
My opener hums but the door doesn't move — what is that?
A hum with no movement usually means the opener is trying against a door that's mechanically stuck — most often a snapped spring — or the drive gear inside the opener has stripped. Stop pressing the button (it burns the motor) and have it diagnosed; both causes are same-visit fixes.
